Etiquette: Invitation Wording & Divorced Parents

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

One of our most popular etiquette questions when it comes to wording Wedding invitations is “How to word a wedding invitation with divorced parents?”. While we reference “Crane’s Wedding Blue Book” and “Emily Post Wedding Etiquette”, we use etiquette as a guide and not a rule. We always want you to pick wording that is comfortable for you and your family so that no person’s feelings are hurt. Oftentimes, we find that using the line “Together with our parents” or “Together with our families” is a simply solution.

What proper etiquette says…

When the bride’s parents are divorced, the proper way to word an invitation is to list the names of the bride’s parents at the top of the invitation. The mother’s name will appear on the first line and the father’s name is on the line beneath it. The lines are not separated by “and.”

If the bride’s mother has not remarried, she uses “Mrs.” followed by her first name, maiden name, and married name. When the bride’s mother is divorced from the bride’s father and has remarried, she uses “Mrs.” followed by her husband’s full name.

The above etiquette is the same when listing the groom’s parents underneath his name on a “son of” line.

For more information about wedding invitation etiquette, never hesitate to give us a call or send us an email. Feel free to read more about wedding etiquette by visiting http://www.crane.com/etiquette.aspx?C=WeddingEtiquette.

Shower the Couple in a Unique Way!

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

After attending countless bridal showers, are you looking for a way to shower the bride and groom in a fun and unique way? Here are some ideas, even ones great for couple showers. If you have an idea you would like to share, we would love to hear from you!

  • Stock the Bar: Great for a couple shower. Assign each a different drink and let them provide the couple with the ingredients for that drink as well as appropriate glassware, bar tools, etc.  You can also just let the guests know of the Stock the Bar theme and let them be creative on their own. Serve up a signature cocktail for the couple and pair with yummy appetizers.
  • Tool & Garden:Again, a perfect theme for a couple shower. Make sure the couple is registered at Home Depot, Smith & Hawken, Lowe’s and the like. It is great theme for the couple who has just bought their first home. You can even assign each guest with an area of the home such as “garage”, “vegetable garden”, “deck”, etc. Have a casual BBQ for the guests.
  • Kitchen Shower with a  twist: We all know of the traditional kitchen shower, but tie it with a cooking class. Either bring a chef to the home or have the shower at a cooking school.
  • Alphabet Shower: Each guest is given a letter of the alphabet and find gift items that start with that letter.
  • Honeymoon Shower:With the bride and groom’s time caught up in wedding planning, give them one less thing to think about by helping them get prepared for their honeymoon. If they are jet set for Hawaii, make it a Luau theme. Guests could bring items such as beach towels, “Mr.” and “Mrs.” visors, sunscreen, Rhinestone studded “Just Married” swimsuit, etc. If they are hitting the sky slopes in Aspen, light the fire, serve hot chocolate and have guests bring items for this ski-bound couple. Big ticket items multiple guests could purchase together include a new camera or luggage.
